The story behind the making of "A Rose by Any Other Name"
Last summer I literally was nose deep in roses, oblivious to the blazing summer sun that was beating at my back and bouncing towards me off the home's exterior wall. (I felt like the middle part of a summer heat sandwich.) Sweat dripped down my face, into my eyes. Normally one who shuns the summer heat, I was totally enthralled by these flowers, spending a couple of hours sweating and photographing. My only relief was a large light diffuser that I had on a stand behind me to shade the roses from the harsh sunlight. It was a friend's house that I was at, and she kept checking on me to make sure I was ok. No doubt she thought I was a little nuts. But when I'm in the groove, I go for it.
One of my favorite lenses is called Lensbaby. You'll hear me mention it, and if you are into reading the post tags (they are at the bottom of the blog post in tiny type), I usually have it listed if the image was taken with one. This lens imparts a dreamy softness to images, and many of my favorite images were taken with my Lensbaby. And for these roses, I was using the macro attachment, which allowed me to get within millimeters of the roses. (I told you I was nose deep. :) )
Some processing information
This image was converted to black and white. Various sliders were slid in Lightroom adjusting for highlights, shadows and other fun stuff. Then split toned with a soft, very light yellow for the highlights, and a light rosy terra-cotta for the shadows. Getting to this point is all trial and error. Not so much error as just not liking things I try. In fact, I tweaked this one a bit just today, not liking how I it looked after I had last touched it. Now I do.
