I was just looking at a business page on Facebook (it doesn't matter which one, I'll just say it relates to cameras), and I shouldn't have been surprised at all the trash talk responses to the posts. But I was. More than just a criticism or expressing disappointment. It's the choice of words. Snipey. Mean. However you want to describe the tone, it's bullying.
And in the news recently about celebrities dropping Instagram and Twitter - tired of the hate. I can understand why friends of mine are spending less time on social media. Most of us have enough insecurity and negativity just within our inner dialogue that we don't need it from external sources, too.
Aren't we all tired of the hateful tone?
Which is why I've always made the effort to keep my website, newsletter, and business Facebook page a positive place — happy, supportive, encouraging, inspiring — that's my goal. Sometimes I might be a little introspective or thought provoking, but never hateful, never bullying. (For anyone who's been the recipient of bullying, it sucks the uniqueness and happiness right out of you. And you remember it for life. I know.)
So I'm trying to tip the scales towards happiness, hopefulness, and encouragement with my little part of the interwebs. Let's tip the scales together!!
p.s. Something I did to make my personal Facebook page a nicer place was either unfriend the people who were always posting hateful things, or hide them from my feed if I didn't want to unfriend them. All I can say is that after I did this four years ago I do not have the hateful posts in my newsfeed anymore. Plus I try to "like" and comment on posts that I do like! This "trains" Facebook to show you what you want to see (well, for the most part). Give it a try for a few months and see if it makes a difference in your social media happiness.
